There is something about September that makes me immediately want to change my nails. (And light a pumpkin-scented candle!).

🌸 The bright pinks and summery pastels suddenly feel a little out of place, and I start reaching for deeper, moodier colors almost overnight.

The good news is that fall nails in 2026 are giving us plenty to work with. Deep wine shades are back, glossy finishes are having a moment, chrome is moving into richer territory, and classic autumn colors are getting updated in ways that feel much more modern than the usual pumpkin-orange manicure.

And because this is Pale Cool Beauty, we are also going to talk about something that tends to get forgotten in seasonal nail roundups: undertone.

You can absolutely participate in fall nail trends without choosing a color that makes your hands look red, yellow, or washed out.

Here are the fall nail colors and trends worth trying this season, plus a few tips for choosing the ones that will look best on you.

The Fall Nail Colors Taking Over 2026

Fall usually brings back the classics, but the shades themselves change slightly from year to year. This season feels particularly rich and polished, with deeper colors and sophisticated finishes taking center stage.

🥀 Burgundy and Wine

Deep burgundy and wine nails are a fall classic, especially in cooler blue-based shades.

It would barely be fall without burgundy nails.

Deep wine, merlot, oxblood, and burgundy give you that quintessential autumn look without requiring nail art or embellishments. They also transition beautifully from early fall into the holiday season.

For cool undertones, pay attention to the base of your red. A burgundy with a blue, berry, or purple base will usually be more flattering than one that leans brick or brown.

Brown nails are still very much part of the fall conversation, but you don't have to reach for a warm caramel brown.

Cooler chocolate shades, mushroom browns, espresso, and brown shades with a subtle grey or mauve base can give you the same cozy autumn effect without looking orange against cool skin.

If you're shopping in person, compare several bottles side by side. Once you put a warm brown next to a cooler brown, that hidden orange undertone becomes much easier to spot.

Inky navy nails bring all the drama of a dark fall manicure with a distinctly cool-toned finish.

Navy deserves more attention as a fall nail color.

It has the depth we associate with autumn without relying on brown, orange, or red. A dark inky navy can also look incredibly sophisticated on short nails.

For something slightly more dramatic, look for navy with a subtle shimmer or cat-eye effect.

Charcoal and smoky grey are sleek fall alternatives to brown, especially for cool-toned skin.

Grey is another easy way to get that moody fall feeling.

Charcoal, slate, graphite, and smoky grey work especially well as we move toward late fall. They also pair beautifully with silver jewelry, which makes them particularly easy to wear if your coloring is cool.

A rich blue-based red works beautifully for fall and keeps the colour crisp rather than pulling orange.

You do not have to abandon red until Christmas.

Chrome isn't disappearing just because summer is over.

You can also adapt this trend to your own coloring. Cool-toned? Try silver, smoky pewter, gunmetal, cool burgundy chrome, or an icy cat-eye instead of automatically reaching for copper or bronze.

And you don't necessarily need a salon appointment. Chrome nail powders are readily available online, including inexpensive options on Amazon, so this is one of those trends you can experiment with at home over nail polish you already own.

If chrome feels like more effort than you want to put into your manicure, the next trend is about as easy as it gets.

Sometimes the finish is the manicure.

Another fall trend highlighted by Green Wedding Shoes is the return to extremely glossy nails. Instead of gems, elaborate nail art, or heavy embellishments, a saturated color finished with a glass-like top coat creates the whole look.

And I love how easy this one is.

Pick one gorgeous color, apply a really good glossy top coat, and you're done.

Deep wine, blackberry, navy, cool chocolate, plum, and blue-based red all look especially beautiful with that almost-wet shine. It's also a great way to make an inexpensive polish look much more luxe.

Before you pick a shade based entirely on what is trending, though, there is another factor worth considering.

Seasonal nail trends have a funny habit of assuming everyone looks good in the colors traditionally associated with that season.

Fall inspiration tends to mean pumpkin orange, mustard, rust, camel, copper, and golden brown. Those colors can be gorgeous. They simply aren't universally flattering.

Your personal color season can help you translate the trend into something that works with your natural coloring.

You don't need complicated nail art to make your fall nails look intentional.

One Moody Color

Probably the easiest option of all.

Choose burgundy, blackberry, espresso, charcoal, or navy and use the same shade across every nail. Keep the shape neat and finish with an ultra-glossy top coat.

Simple, but gorgeous.

A Cool-Toned Cat Eye

Magnetic polish gives you much more visual interest without requiring you to paint tiny leaves onto your fingernails.

For cool skin, look for cat-eye polishes in:

The shifting metallic effect makes even a single-color manicure look much more intricate than it actually was to create.

First, stop judging nail polish entirely by how it looks inside the bottle.

Whenever possible, look up swatches on actual hands. Undertones that aren't obvious in the bottle can become very obvious once the polish is on skin.

Be more cautious with shades that have obvious orange, yellow, rust, or golden bases.

That doesn't mean someone with cool skin is forbidden from wearing copper nail polish.

My favorite thing about fall nails this year is how many ways there are to interpret the season.

You can take the cooler route with blackberry, navy, charcoal, and pewter. You can skip nail art entirely and let a beautiful color and ridiculously glossy top coat do all the work.

The trend should be inspiration, never a rulebook.

Pick the fall colors that make your skin look great, borrow the trends you actually like, and leave the rest behind.
